Stormwater Drainage Makeover in Chester County

Transforming a Troubled Driveway into a Functional Focal Point

In Chester County, where heavy rains and long driveways often create stormwater challenges, proper drainage is essential — both to protect your property and maintain curb appeal. One local homeowner recently reached out to Pickel Landscape Group to address a persistent runoff issue along their long, sloped driveway. What began as a functional fix turned into a beautiful landscape upgrade.

The Challenge: Redirecting Stormwater Before It Reaches the Driveway

This client’s primary goal was to reduce the amount of stormwater flowing toward and across their asphalt driveway during storms. The existing lawn area didn’t contain the water effectively, which risked erosion and pavement damage over time. The solution needed to be practical but also blend seamlessly into their existing landscape.

The Solution: A Boulder-Lined Swale with Local Flair

To manage the water properly, we removed the existing lawn and excavated the area to reshape the drainage swale — ensuring water would stay within its bounds and not escape onto the driveway.

From there, we enhanced the swale with natural boulders that complement the client’s existing boulder retaining wall. We also incorporated Delaware Riverstone, tying the new drainage feature into other elements already present in the landscape. These materials not only serve a functional purpose – slowing and directing water flow – but also add natural beauty and texture.

Why This Project Stands Out

What makes this job special is how it combines engineering with aesthetics. Drainage features are often overlooked in the landscape design process, but here they were transformed into an eye-catching feature. The swale enhances the home’s first impression as visitors approach the long driveway – providing both protection and polish.

The Outcome: Less Runoff, More Curb Appeal

Now, the homeowner enjoys a property that is better protected from stormwater damage and looks even more refined from the moment you pull in. This project shows that with thoughtful planning, functional improvements can be beautiful, too.
